What Is 3D Laser Etching?
The process of 3D laser etching, also known as laser engraving, is a method of marking a variety of objects using the heat and light of a laser beam, instead of destructible bits made from metal, diamond or other materials. This method has various advantages over more traditional ways of etching and engraving, such as the ability to work on microscopic surface areas, such as computer chips. Lasers can also be used in this way to bond a marking substance to the work surface in order to stamp the object without physically cutting into it.
Instead of using a rotary device and bits, 3D laser etching usually requires a laser engraver machine. A standard etching device of this kind is typically similar in size and shape to an office copy machine with the lid lifted, though there are smaller manual devices, as well as very large industrial sized machines, too. Instead of a pane of glass and a light that only moves horizontally, however, the work surface of the laser engraver is a metal sheet with rulers along the top and side, with a laser on a carriage that moves left, right, forward and backward. Generally the laser beam is controlled by a computer software program, in much the same way as a printer works to print an image from a personal computer. Blanks are inserted into the machine similarly to the way paper would be fed into a printer.
This style of engraving is not limited to marking serial numbers on computer equipment, either. 3D laser etching can be used to engrave trophies, jewelry, and various gifts, such as bronze belt buckles, crystal paper weights, pens, and magnets. Laser engraving can be done on many woods, leather, various metals, glass and even some kinds of plastic.
3D laser etching has revolutionized the jewelry engraving industry, as it has completely altered what is possible to score onto the inside of rings and other keepsake pieces. Specialized machines have been created by jewelers not only for ring engraving, but also for imprinting designs on the backs of watches and other detailing.
