This either heats up the point at which the laser touches, causing the material there to vaporize, or fractures the material there, causing it to flake off. Either way, due to the efficiency of the laser’s ability to convert light energy into heat, an elaborate cooling system or a pulsed laser beam is in most cases needed to prevent excessive heating.
